An illustrative Florida spring scene. At Blue Spring, manatees are viewed from the boardwalk.

There’s something special about a winter morning in Florida. The air has a little nip, the coffee tastes extra good, and somewhere inland, a crowd of gentle manatees is gathering in warm, clear water.

From Flagler Beach, that scene is an easy day trip away. Blue Spring State Park in Orange City offers a memorable way to see manatees in their natural habitat, with boardwalk overlooks that let you watch without disturbing them. Then, after a morning among the springside trees, you can swing through DeLand for Coffee or lunch before returning to the Atlantic.

It’s a lovely change of scenery for a beach vacation… and a reminder that a relaxing home base makes the whole trip feel easier.

Why manatees gather at Blue Spring

Manatees are sensitive to cold. When the Atlantic and the St. Johns River cool down, these mild-mannered mammals head for warmer water. Blue Spring stays around 72 degrees year-round, making it a cozy refuge during the winter season.

The best time to see them is generally November 15 through March 31. The number of manatees changes with the weather. A cold front can bring hundreds into the spring run, and recent reported peaks have topped 700. There’s no guaranteed count on any given day, but cold mornings often bring especially exciting viewing.

During manatee season, the spring run is closed to water activities, including swimming, diving, kayaking and paddleboarding. That gives the manatees space to rest and warm up. Visitors can still enjoy the experience from the boardwalk, following the spring run to viewing areas above the water.

How to plan your Blue Spring day trip

A little planning goes a long way, especially during manatee season.

Choose your date. The season runs from November 15 through March 31. For a chance to see larger groups, look for the first cold mornings after a front, particularly from late December through February. The weather is part of the magic, but it also means manatee numbers can vary from one day to the next.

Reserve your day-use entry. As of July 15, 2026, all day-use visitors need a reservation. Reservations open up to 60 days in advance, so check the official Blue Spring State Park page and plan ahead. Same-day entry may depend on remaining capacity, so it’s wise not to count on arriving without a reservation.

Aim for opening time. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Arriving right around 8 gives you more breathing room for parking and boardwalk viewing. Vehicle capacity can fill by mid-morning, especially on busy days. If you’re hoping to arrive at opening, leave Flagler Beach early and allow extra time for the drive and entrance traffic.

Budget for admission. The standard fee is $6 per vehicle. Check the park’s hours and fees information when planning, and follow the reservation instructions for your visit.

The drive from Flagler Beach is roughly 45 to 50 miles and about an hour, depending on your starting point and traffic. The route heads south on US-1 and west toward Orange City. Before you leave, check your navigation app for current conditions and confirm your reservation details.

What the day looks like

Think easy layers for the cool morning, water to sip, and a phone or camera ready for the boardwalk overlooks. Flip-flops are fine, though comfortable walking shoes can be nice if you plan to take your time along the path.

Once you’re there, the visit is wonderfully simple: stroll the boardwalk, pause at the overlooks, and watch for manatees moving through the clear water below. Sometimes you’ll spot a nose or a back breaking the surface. Other times, you may see several shapes drifting together in the spring’s blue-green depths. Take it slowly. The quiet moments are part of the experience.

Keep a respectful distance and follow park guidance. The manatees are there to rest in the warm water, and the boardwalk offers a beautiful view without needing to get in the spring.

After a morning at the park, make DeLand your relaxed stop on the way home. Downtown is a good place to stretch your legs, pick up a coffee, and find lunch. Trilogy Coffee Cafe serves coffee, espresso drinks and pastries in historic downtown DeLand. Check its current hours before you go, especially around holidays.

Then, back to the ocean

After a day among spring water and cypress trees, returning to Flagler Beach feels like its own little reward. Unpack, take a breath, and head out to the sand via the dune walk-over right in front of Bombora Oceanfront Suites. The Atlantic is back in view, with an unobstructed 180-degree ocean panorama and the soft, salty rhythm of the waves.

Want to keep the evening easy? Flagler Pier and the town’s restaurants, cafes and bars are all within walking distance. Or settle onto the shared ocean-side patio with a cup of Coffee or a drink as the sky changes color. Did I mention the best part of a day trip can be coming home without a long drive to your hotel?

Bombora is a small, family-owned property with four modern suites, from a one-bedroom to a three-bedroom penthouse. Each has a full kitchen and a sleeper sofa, with ocean views to welcome you back. There’s free on-site laundry for the practical bits, and all the comforts of home in a retro beach town setting.
